Personal Profile

Professor Jinpeng Sun is a New Cornerstone Investigator (2023). He has been awarded the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars (Pharmacology, 2018), the Sustained Funding for National Distinguished Young Scholars (Pharmacology, 2023), and key projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, among others. His honors include the Third National Award for Innovation and Excellence, the Tan Jiazhen Life Science Innovation Award, the 17th China Pharmaceutical Development Award for Clinical Medicine Research, inclusion in China's Top 10 Science and Technology News Stories of 2023, and China's Top 10 University Science and Technology Advances of 2023.

Professor Sun has long been engaged in pharmacological research, focusing on G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). He has achieved systematic and original results in ligand-receptor recognition, drug target validation, and membrane receptor drug development. He established novel systems for endogenous ligand capture and highly sensitive multi-pathway GPCR activity detection, enabling the characterization of transient and weak ligand-receptor interactions. He discovered membrane receptors for key hormones and metabolites involved in major diseases, such as membrane receptors for steroid hormones, ceramides, and other important metabolites including insulin fragments and matricellular proteins. Additionally, he developed innovative methods like microscale biomechanical activation, identified GPCRs responsible for sensing balance and hearing, and elucidated the molecular mechanisms by which these receptors mediate force and various sensations such as itch, smell, and pH perception, thereby expanding the boundaries of GPCR ligand recognition. By effectively applying new technologies such as structural biology combined with AI-assisted ligand design, he has achieved high-resolution biased GPCR ligand design and developed bioactive substances with potential medicinal value. More than 20 small molecules and peptides have completed pharmacokinetic and toxicological studies at the animal level.

As a corresponding author (including co-corresponding authorship), Professor Sun has published papers in top-tier journals, including  Nature  (9 papers),  Science  (2 papers, one featured as a cover story),  Cell  (5 papers, one featured as a cover story),  Cell Metabolism  (2 papers),  Nature Metabolism  (2 papers),  Nature Chemical Biology  (4 papers),  Molecular Cell  (2 papers),  Cell Research  (3 papers),  PNAS  (6 papers), and  Nature Communications  (10 papers), among others. He has published 152 SCI-indexed papers in total, 13 of which received special commentaries—including three in  Nature Reviews Drug Discovery  and one in  Nature Reviews Cardiology . Five papers are highly cited, and five were selected as journal covers. His work has an h-index of 43, with 16 papers cited over 100 times. His research findings have been incorporated into textbooks such as  Pharmacology  and  Fundamentals of Disease and Pharmaceutical Intervention .

Professor Sun has been frequently invited to deliver presentations at domestic and international academic conferences and research institutes. He has given 17 keynote speeches at international conferences, including serving as a Section Chair (Drug development according to signaling diversities of GPCRs) and delivering a keynote at the 19th World Congress of Basic & Clinical Pharmacology (Glasgow, UK, 2023), as well as presenting an invited plenary lecture on the opening day of the 11th International Adhesion GPCR Workshop (Mexico City, 2024). He has also participated in organizing several international conferences, such as the Annual International Conference on Ion Channels, and exerts extensive influence in the field of international pharmacology.
