Dean's Message

The School of Basic Medical Sciences (SBMS) was established in 1954 as the Department of Basic Medical Sciences at Beijing Medical College, with its academic roots tracing back to 1913. It was renamed the School of Basic Medical Sciences of Beijing Medical University in May 1985, and adopted its current name following the merger of Beijing Medical University and Peking University in April 2000. Over the past 70 years, we have been deeply grateful for the dedication of generations of medical scientists and educators, as well as the contributions of faculty, staff, students, and alumni. With national support from the "211 Project," "985 Program," and the "Double First-Class" initiative, the school has become a leading institution in medical education, research, and talent cultivation in China. During the first phase of the "Double First-Class" initiative, the school achieved remarkable progress in talent cultivation, scientific research, social services, and overall disciplinary advancement, making significant contributions to the advancement of medical science in China.

The core mission of the SBMS is to cultivate innovative talent, it pioneered the eight-year doctoral program in Basic Medical Sciences. The school was designated a National First-Class Undergraduate Program in 2019, and selected as one of the first pilot programs under the Ministry of Education’s "Strong Foundation Plan" and "Training Plan 2.0 for Top Students in Basic Disciplines" in 2020. These initiatives have established the school’s distinctive strength in training top-tier professionals in basic medical sciences, producing numerous outstanding figures in medical research and education.

Committed to addressing global scientific frontiers and major disease prevention needs, the school has strengthened its cutting-edge research platforms and innovation capabilities. It houses 15 national and provincial-level key laboratories, with six secondary disciplines ranking among the top 1% or top 1‰ globally by ESI. Supported by major projects from funding agencies such as NSFC, MOST and NHC, the school has advancd basic research and accelerated translational applications, and published groundbreaking studies in prestigious journals such as  Science, Nature, Cell,   NEJM , etc., which has earned scientific awards, patents, and clinical trial approvals, and led to major advancements in disease mechanisms, targeted therapies, novel vaccines, cell-based therapies, molecular imaging, and diagnostic reagents.

In the 21st century, humanity faces challenges such as cancer, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, neurological disorders, infectious diseases, and an aging population. At the same time, the medical field is undergoing a revolution fueled by advances in omics technologies, gene editing, biotherapies, and intelligent medicine. High-resolution, high-throughput, and AI-driven innovations are reshaping modern medicine, accelerating the transition from laboratory discoveries to clinical applications. As we embark on this new journey, we face both challenges and opportunities.

Upholding our tradition of excellence, we will deepen reforms, enhance interdisciplinary integration between basic research and clinical medicine. Guided by the spirit of its 70th anniversary theme—"Upholding Integrity and Innovating for Excellence", the school have the utmost confidence to realize our mission of building a world-class School of Basic Medical Sciences with distinctive Chinese characteristics.
