Personal Profile

Dr. Peipei Zhang is a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at Peking University Health Science Center and a doctoral supervisor. In 2014, she received her PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology through a joint program between Beijing Normal University and the National Institute of Biological Sciences (NIBS), Beijing. During her doctoral studies, she researched the function of autophagy in the laboratory of Dr. Hong Zhang at NIBS. From 2014 to 2021, she was a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of J. Paul Taylor at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (USA), where she investigated the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS and FTD.

Dr. Zhang has published peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals including Cell, Nature Communications, Cell Reports, and eLife. In addition, the OptoGranules technology she developed has been issued a U.S. patent and licensed to companies.

Her research group is committed to revealing the regulatory mechanisms of stress granules and the molecular pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases. Her primary research directions include:

1. Dynamic regulatory mechanisms of stress granules and phase separation

2. The relationship between membraneless organelles and various human diseases

3. The molecular pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases
