Research Direction

Vascular microenvironment in vascular homeostasis and major cardiovascular diseases

Personal Profile

Professor Kongis Dean of the School of Basic Medical Science, and Chair of the Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology at Peking University Health Science Center. She was awarded as Distinguished Young Scholars from National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the Yangtze River Scholars Distinguished Professor, the Leading Talent of "Ten Thousand Plan", and the Fellow of the International Society for Heart Research (FISHR). She also leads multiple scientific research projects, including the Innovative Research Group, Key Program, International Cooperation Program from NSFC and the Ministry of Science and Technology. The research of professor Kong focuses on the regulatory mechanisms of the vascular microenvironment in vascular homeostasis and major cardiovascular diseases, including atherosclerosis, aortic aneurysm/dissection, and vascular calcification. Key research areas include: (1) the role of the extracellular matrix in the maintenance and remodeling of vascular homeostasis; and (2) the identification, functional analysis, and disease mechanism studies of bioactive metabolites and their receptors. Her team has made groundbreaking discoveries, including new mechanisms of sphingolipid signaling in regulating vascular pathologies, the central role of extracellular matrix remodeling in cardiovascular diseases, and innovative therapeutic targets for aortic diseases. She has published over 150 papers in leading international cardiovascular journals such as Nature, Science, Nature Reviews Cardiology, Circulation, and European Heart Journal, which have been widely cited and featured in numerous special reviews. She has also developed several patented technologies, including an ADAMTS-7 therapeutic vaccine targeting residual lipid risk in atherosclerosis, and candidate drugs such as naringenin for the diagnosis and treatment of aortic aneurysm/dissection, as well as MRI diagnostic probes. She serves as Associate Editor ofAm J Physiology-Cell Physiology, and editorial board member of journalsincludingCirc Res, Matrix Biology and Cardiovasc Res.
