Research Focus

Investigation into the pathogenesis of human monogenic disorders; Studies on molecular mechanisms underlying bone homeostasis.

Personal Profile

Prof. Zhao received her Bachelor's degree in Biology from Lanzhou University in 1992 and obtained her Ph.D. in Genetics from Peking Union Medical College in 1999. Since April 2002, she has been affiliated with the School of Basic Medical Sciences at Peking University, where she currently serves as Professor, Doctoral Supervisor, and Executive Vice Chair of the Department of Medical Genetics. She is also a member of the Rare Disease Branch of the Beijing Medical Association. She has led and participated in numerous research projects supported by major funding agencies, including the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National High-Tech Research and Development Program (863 Program), the Capital Health Research and Development Fund, and the Beijing Natural Science Foundation. Her research has identified several pathogenic mutations in monogenic diseases such as congenital tooth agenesis, familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and xeroderma pigmentosum, and has further elucidated the underlying molecular mechanisms of these disorders. In recent years, her research focus on the molecular regulation of bone homeostasis, during which her lab has discovered some novel molecules involved in the differentiation and functional regulation of osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and osteocytes. These findings are anticipated to contribute to the development of new theoretical frameworks for the diagnosis and treatment of bone metabolic disorders.
