Research Interests
Pain and Analgesia. Research focuses on chronic pain mechanisms, including the peripheral nerve ion channels and receptor mechanisms of chronic pain, as well as the central mechanisms of co-morbidity of chronic pain with learning and memory, anxiety and depression.
Personal profile
Director of the Institute of Neuroscience, Peking University
Director of the Key Laboratory of Neuroscience, Ministry of Education and National Health Commission
Director, Medical Innovation Center (Taizhou) of Peking University.
Currently serves as a member and convener of tThe Basic Medical Sciences Committee of the State Council's Academic Degrees Committee; Editor-in-Chief, Chinese Journal of Pain Medicine; Deputy Editor-in-Chief, Neuroscience Bulletin. International Association for the Study of Pain “Award for Excellence in Pain Research and Management”, the Beijing Science and Technology Award, and the Science and Technology Award of the China Acupuncture and Moxibustion Society. Chief Scientist of the "973" Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology. Has received two provincial and ministerial-level science and technology awards. Honored as a "Pioneer in Teaching and Education" in the Beijing Education System.
Education and Work Experience
Received a Bachelor's degree in Medicine and a Master's degree in Pharmacology from Henan Medical University in 1985 and 1990, respectively. Obtained a Doctor of Medicine degree in Pathophysiology from Tongji Medical University in 1993 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship training in neurophysiology at Beijing Medical University in 1995.
Appointed as a lecturer in the Department of Physiology, Beijing Medical University in January 1996, promoted to associate professor in August 1997, and has been a professor in the Department of Neurobiology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Peking University since August 2001.
Served as the Vice Dean of the School of Basic Medical Sciences from January 2003 to June 2013, and as the Dean from June 2018 to June 2023. Currently serves as the Director of the Laboratory Animal Science Center, Peking University Health Science Center since March 2022.
Courses Taught
Mainly teaches undergraduate courses such as "Neurobiology", "Pain Medicine" (optional course), and PBL courses, as well as graduate courses such as "Advanced Neurobiology", "Advances in Neuroscience", and "Neurobiology Experiments".
Research Achievements
Has led and completed over 30 research projects, including the "973" Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology (as the chief scientist), key and general projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, etc.
Mainly engaged in the research of pain and analgesia (including acupuncture analgesia) mechanisms, and was the first to conduct research on the molecular mechanisms of HCN ion channels and TRPV1 receptors in peripheral nerve fibers in chronic pain. Revealed the role of endogenous formaldehyde in the mechanism of cancer pain. Currently, research is being conducted on the mechanism of chronic pain based on neural networks. Has published over 220 papers in journals such as Nature Communications, Science Advances, Autophagy, Cell Reports, Journal of Neuroscience, and Pain (over 130 SCI papers), contributed 15 chapters to books, with over 9,500 citations and an H-index of 54 and an i10-index exceeding 100.
Supervision of Students
Has served as a doctoral supervisor for 23 years, guiding over 60 postgraduate students. Students have published research results in professional journals and top-level journals in the field upon graduation, including two recipients of the Outstanding Doctoral Graduate Award of Peking University and three recipients of the Outstanding Doctoral Graduate Award of Beijing Municipality. The majority of the graduates I have supervised have taken up positions in universities, research institutions both at home and abroad, as well as in pharmaceutical research and development organizations. Among them, over 20 have become independent PIs, associate professors, or professors.
I have been engaged in administrative work for postgraduate students for more than 20 years. I was voted as the "Good Teacher and Friend" by the medical department's postgraduate students and was awarded the title of "Top Ten Mentors" by Peking University for postgraduate students.
