Dr. Burg has made enormous contributions to nephrology in two important areas as follows. His invented the method of perfusion of isolated renal tubules , which forms the basis for the study of kidney functionin health and disease. Also, his present studies of osmotic stress inform us of how cells in the renal inner medulla function despite the very high levels of salt and urea to which they are exposed. Based on these achievements he has received numerous awards and honors, including election to the National Academy of Sciences.
